What is conflict transformation?

Conflict transformation is a process of cultivating transformative and lasting change, inclusive of but not limited to immediate solutions. It looks to transform the relationships and structures which create an environment in which conflict has taken place or is currently taking place.

 

Conflict Transformation vs. Conflict Resolution

While conflict transformation looks at root causes and asks the question, “how we do end something destructive and build something transformative?'“, conflict resolution asks the short term question: “how do we end something not desired in this moment?”

When we are looking at transformation vs. resolution, it’s not a comparison of what is better or worse but rather understanding what’s going to address underlying systems and structures, create sustainable change and shift relationship dynamics.

We are dealing with more collective and interpersonal conflict than ever before yet most of us either don’t have the tools to effectively engage with conflict or if we do have the tools, we struggle to use them.

In our fast paced society, we are looking for fast paced solutions.

And when you honestly look at the ways you and your teams handle conflict, are your current practices actually working for you?

Are you building stronger relationships? Creating long term sustainable solutions?

For many, our lack of tools coupled with our personal histories and stress responses have many of us caught on extreme sides of the pendulum: fight mode or avoiding conflict all together.

Neither create space for dialogue, connection and possible solutions.

But there is a different way….

 

This workshop is for you if:

  • You’re frustrated from the ways conflict is (or is not) being handled on your team(s)

  • You’re ready to find both short term solutions and long term sustainable change to conflict

  • You want (or desperately need) in the moment tools for managing stress during moments of conflict

  • You’re tired of passive aggressiveness, issues being stepped over and/or full blown explosions as responses to individual or collective conflict

  • You want to improve relationship dynamics for yourself or amongst your teams but feel stuck or overwhelmed at where to start

  • You want simple and practical tools for communication and managing high emotions during conflict

 

In this Workshop you will:

  • Build shared understanding of individual and collective responses when conflict arises

  • Discover and implement shared values to instill and uplift in moments of conflict

  • Learn tools to immediately settle your nervous system and ground during moments of tension

  • Provide + practice practical tools for engaging with organizational conflict in an embodied way 

  • Creating structures that support conflict transformation goals for long term sustainable solutions

  • Discover practical actions to apply to create structures for coming together during conflict vs. being torn apart 

 
After the workshop we quickly put a committee together to address some of the conflicts we had at our org. The committee’s role & responsibilities were developed in the actual workshop so it was easy to implement!

OPTION A

Half Day (3 hours) Workshop

Intention:

  • Fundamentals for engaging with conflict with others in a healthy and generative way

  • Understanding our role within conflict

Workshop Details:

  • Creating a healthy & supportive environment for participants to engage in conversations around conflict

  • Important definitions for conflict transformation & conflict resolution 

  • Introduction to the 4 stress responses 

  • Identifying your stress response 

  • Tools for managing your stress response

  • Understanding the connection between the stress response and your relationship to conflict 

  • Envisioning an ideal group future around handling conflict

 

OPTION C


2 Day Workshop: 

Intention:

  • Build off of Day 1 workshop (self + group)

  • Tailored to fit to your organization’s specific needs around conflict

    • Included but not limited to:

      • Clarity on organizational culture around conflict (i.e: What’s the general response when conflict comes up in your organization?)

      • Fundamentals + tools for engaging with conflict within your specific organizational context

      • Creating commitments & structures to apply tools within organizational culture 

OPTION B

Full Day (6 hours) Workshop:

Intention:

  • Build off of 1st half of workshop (see Option A)

  • Provide critical skills and tools for mindful communication and listening 

  • Apply & practice tools in real time

  • Create personal goals + actions to apply tools 

Workshop Details:

  • Creating a healthy & supportive environment for participants to engage in conversations around mindful communication 

  • Conflict Resolution vs. Conflict Transformation 

  • Learning practical tools for mindful communication 

  • Applying & practicing tools for mindful communication to real time scenarios 

  • Creating commitments & structures to apply tools within interpersonal relationships

  • Note: This workshop can be done as 1 day or split into 2 separate consecutive half days depending on organizational needs and scheduling 

 
As an organization we now consistently use EFT as a tool to help us regulate when there is tension or a conflict. It gives us all space to wait until we are more regulated before we engage.
