How EFT Helps Nervous System Dysregulation
What is The Nervous system?
The nervous system is a complex network of nerves and cells that carry messages to and from the brain and spinal cord to various parts of the body. This system consists of two regulation systems in the body: the Sympathetic (fight/flight/freeze/fawn) and the Parasympathetic (rest and digest) Nervous System.
What is Nervous System Dysregulation?
Nervous system dysregulation is the state that occurs to our nervous system when we are unable to maintain or return to a state of balance or homeostasis after we experience stress from internal or external stimuli.
What are Signs of Nervous System Dysregulation?
Physical signs might look like:
Improper functioning of our internal organs
Exhaustion
Weakened digestion
Weakened immune system
Difficulty focusing
Sleep issues
Persistent muscle pain
Physical ailments
Emotional signs might look like:
Anxiety
Panic attacks
Depression
Mood Swings
What is EFT Tapping?
EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Technique and is a simple and effective scientifically proven somatic based stress releasing tool. Often referred to as emotional acupuncture without needles, we stimulate a series of acupressure points using light tapping of our fingers and calming phrases.
While these points have associations with traditional Chinese medicine meridians, EFT tapping is a unique therapeutic approach that combines elements of psychology, acupressure, and personal development.
The best part: the safety and simplicity of the EFT Tapping points make emotional regulation, nervous system healing and overcoming limiting beliefs accessible to you in any given moment and simpler than you may have ever believed.
How Does EFT Tapping Work?
Tapping helps to regulate the amygdala, the part of the brain that is responsible for the fight / flight / freeze / fawn response (sympathetic nervous system) and allows you to settle into your ‘rest and digest’ state of being (parasympathetic nervous system).
Challenging and stressful emotions and events happen to all of us. We are also all - particularly marginalized communities- massively impacted by systemic oppression, classism, ableism, capitalism, racism, sexism, patriarchy and state sanctioned violence.
However, it is when that stress stays unprocessed in the body (not the mind) that it can turn into trauma.
As you tap on specific acupressure points, while focusing on calming phrases, you release stress, trauma and trapped energy, create more calm in the body and nervous system to re-wire behaviors and limiting beliefs that may be keeping you stuck in certain areas of your life.
Who Can Use EFT Tapping?
Anyone and everyone who is interested and invested in their own growth and healing can use this tool with or without a practitioner. For deeper or more long standing situations / issues, I recommend working with a trauma informed practitioner to help navigate with more ease, effectiveness and support.
After years of being a trauma informed and certified practitioner, I now specialize in working with those who identify as neurodivergent and or folks with high sensitivity, creative and purpose driven who have a desire to better manage their energy, release people pleasing tendencies, reclaim their creativity, create a life that honors their intuition and high sensitivity and hone in on the unique gifts they want to share with the world.
