Creativity is Your Currency

Towards Christmas time last year, I was trying to figure out what to get my dad as a gift as he can be difficult to shop for.

So, during acting class I decided to use one of my imaginary scenarios on stage to start playing around with the idea of creating a piece of art for him vs. trying to buy him something.

I had recently re-discovered my love of watercolor so during class I came up with a scenario where I was pretending to be late to a Christmas party and needed to create a gift for my dad at the last minute.

In those couple of minutes I quickly asked myself what my dad loves the most in this world and one of those things are his Koi fish……so I started sketching the outline of one.

After class I decided to keep running with what I had started and ended up painting one of my favorite pieces to date.

Without thinking much about it, I posted a picture of it on my social media and within a couple of minutes the founder of a surf organization / collective I'm a part of, Color The Water, reached out to express interest in the piece and asked if I would consider putting it on surf boards.

And just like that *snaps* an entirely new world of possibilities that I could have never imagined before that moment opened up.

I was estatic. Me, a (black) artist creating art for surfboards……?

But this is exactly what happens when we make space and time for our creativity; when we nurture it, show it devotion and find spaces for it to feel safe and thrive in.

As a creative person and as a creative entrepreneur, my creativity is a huge part of my energetic and financial currency and I’ve learned to prioritize it but I would lovingly assert that we are all creative people, whether we identify with that or not.

Just like in the example I gave above, our creativity is the foundation for our own personal evolution, giving us access to entirely new worlds that our often critical and limited mind (and beliefs) could never have seen.

When we say yes to our creativity, we are saying yes to an endless well of imagination and that imagination is not only what creates new realities for ourselves but it’s also what creates new worlds and realities on a collective level.

Unfortunately for so many of us, due to the demands of life as well as our own limiting beliefs around our creativity (usually caused by some form of trauma) we feel drained or spend that currency carelessly / elsewhere.

Instead of taking that class we’ve had our eye on, we binge watch another show; after a long day of working a job we feel mediocre (at best) about we scroll on social media instead of picking up that book we’ve been wanting to finish.

This isn’t a judgement, we all need to cope and escape sometimes (honestly I get a lot of joy & inspiration out of the occasional binge watch); it is however, an invitation to take an honest look at where and what we send our energy into and asking if what it’s going towards is expanding or contracting us.

This is Energetic Hygiene at its finest.

Your creativity may not be a part of your financial currency (for now) but it is undoubtedly apart of your energetic currency……and that currency is priceless. It is a core part of your unique energetic blueprint.

When we say yes to our creativity, we are pouring into our own cups and giving ourselves over to our joy, our own evolution and possibly to something that’s bigger than anything our small minds could imagine - this world needs your creativity.
