I'm going to keep it very real with you: my path to creative entrepreneurship has been far from easy and even farther from straight forward.
When I first left my advertising job 5 years ago, I jumped immediately into "doing" mode: networking, scheduling, putting myself out there, reading books, ingesting endless information on "How To Build Your Business Quickly!" and "Manifest Your Dream Life NOW!", taking courses, workshops and seminars - anything I could do to give myself some semblance of control, make myself feel prepared for this journey and give me clarity in what often felt like a bottomless sea of uncertainty.
While a lot of those things helped and were integral parts of my journey, the reality comes down to something that sounds intellectually simple but I think most of us deeply struggle with: it takes time.
......Like, a lot of time.......and a lot of support, healing, patience, trust and nervous system regulation.....but we're not going there in this email.
And when we don't honor that this journey takes time, we can often end up (re)creating the exact aspects of our life we are trying to leave behind.......and even worse, quitting on our dreams or the difference we are looking to make.
There's so much more behind creative entrepreneurship than just leaving a 9-5 job or just being creative. Yes, there are absolutely systems and structures and actions that must be put in place; however, on top of the logistical changes there are also deep identity, relational, energetic, emotional and spiritual transitions to be honored if we want to actually create something new and sustainable.
These are incredibly deep, transformative and life changing transitions if we allow them to be.
I'll leave you with one last thing.
There’s a shift happening, can you feel it?
The days of the old American dream of climbing the corporate ladder as the marker of joy and success are falling away.
People want more creativity, sovereignty, connection, community, fulfillment and purpose and they aren’t finding it in the old ways of corporate America.
They want more rest, more control of their time, more energy to give to the people and projects in their life and they want to make a difference in the world.
While for some this may mean simply shifting how they are showing up at their 9-5 and for others this may mean actually leaving.
Either way, shifting from a corporate identity to a creative identity and creative entrepreneurship starts way before you give your notice and remains far after you’ve crossed that threshold.
It’s a life changing transition that goes beyond just the logistics of no longer being an employee or no longer being a certain type of employee.
It’s a beautiful and life altering journey that impacts nearly every aspect of our existence and fundamentally changes who we are and how we show up in the world.
