Re: Being Your Own Muse
Our imagination, our creativity, our ability to dream of new things is what helps us not only build new personal worlds but it also helps our collective dreaming; our collective new world building.
As I watch the chaos around the US election continue to intensify and dysregulate, I keep coming back to a post I made on Instagram a few weeks ago about the power behind nurturing our creativity (and if you’re interested in a free offering I have coming up around nurturing your creativity and creative confidence, keep reading).
Lately when the world has felt like too much and I am weary, I go create something.
When I feel like I am overwhelmed, uninspired, stuck or waiting for something to happen, I go create something.
I’m someone who feels deeply so I’m often weary in this world and I’m a projector, actor and an entrepreneur so I am often waiting.
So I’ve been creating a lot lately.
This time I created a mini gallery of my own artwork for myself.
Well, it was actually for the teenage version of myself.
The version of myself who didn’t get to focus on art and creativity in middle and high school because I was stressed out and dysregulated trying to be a straight A student, star athlete and fit in with all the white kids.
The version of myself who, in between class and practice would go to the art studio and work on the potter’s wheel and tell no one.
The version of me whose college essay was about how potter’s wheel saved my life amidst my severe anxiety and depression at the time.
So I painted my pictures, mixed my colors, made my frames and hung up my art on my wall and made myself a gallery.
A gallery to remind myself that I am always an artist regardless of what is or is not happening around me.
A gallery to remind myself that I actually can create different worlds, different realities, not just for myself but for the world around me.
An ode to my creativity, the thing that has maybe always been what saves me…….and maybe will help save all of us……..especially right now.
This is why I’ll be running The Everyday Artist: 11 Day Free Creative Challenge, from November 1 till November 11.
We’ll be starting on the 11/1 New Moon, moving though election time and ending on 11/11.
It will be an intentional hour long space to emotionally regulate and get into a creative flow (I’ll be leading group tapping for the first 10-15 minutes), discuss creative prompts + intentions and get into action around something / anything creative in your life.
The intention: ground into yourself with emotional regulation, ground into your creative flow / practice through community and tangible, consistent action and build your creative confidence.
As we watch the turmoil of our world and all of these old systems breaking down, I'm sure you may be seeing reflections of that in your own personal life.
Old patterns, old ways of being, old relationship dynamics, old careers, old dreams and desires.......no longer resonate; they no longer work.
Our imagination, our creativity, our ability to dream of new things is what helps us not only build new personal worlds but it also helps our collective dreaming; our collective new world building.
And you don't have to be a "trained" artist with grand creative dreams or in the process of creating some sort of great masterpiece out into the world to do this (but you totally can be!).
We create for creation's sake; we allow ourselves to be a channel for whatever wants to come through and we see the ways in which that can shape and transform ourselves, our lives, our self-expression and the world around us.
We are, everyday artists.
Come for the regulation, stay for the joy.
